Though abstract, there is often a reference to landscape and the natural world, characterised by a free and gestural application of paint. Colour and its emotional effect is paramount. Influences on her work include memory, music, (she is a highly trained musician), poetry, landscape both rural and urban, abstract expressionism.

She often has no preconceived ideas at the start of a new work, but allows the work to evolve until the final stages of decision and organisation.

Her aim is to create a personal space, one that others might enter and respond to in their own way.

Driven to Abstraction

A short documentary film by Dan Harrison

A short documentary about Jo Brown, a painter of contemporary abstract art. Jo lives and works in a remote location high in the Yorkshire Pennine hills. The surrounding landscape is wild and dramatic, and she talks of how it has had a characterising influence on her work, and her efforts to overcome it. Any comments welcome.
